Employees today look for purpose, involvement, and growth in their workplace – these factors significantly affect a company’s ability to attract and retain talent. In such an environment, traditional onboarding and induction approaches are no longer relevant.
Organizations need to address these challenges through a comprehensive onboarding journey aligned to specific roles and personas and have a way to track impact. Some of the techniques that can be used are as follows:
Preboarding ensures employees review much of the information, complete pre-processes before they show up for their initial onboarding session. Closely monitor the onboarding and integration process for at least the initial period of onboarding. It is important to have short-term planning milestones to monitor performance and ensure a smooth integration result.
It’s also important to add comprehensive Learning and Performance milestones beyond the initial 6-month period as part of the ongoing onboarding training process and measure impact in terms of Time-to-Performance and Time-to-Productivity (TTP).
Ecosystems ensure that there’s a framework in place for your workforce to pursue a journey of continuous learning and development.
This provides access to learning communities and portals that they can tap into for specific learning topics, during (and beyond) their onboarding journey.
Strategies like Gamification, Scenario Based Learning, Story Based Learning, Virtual Reality, and Simulations help engage learners better.
Using a mix of Instructor-Led and Virtual Instructor-Led Training (ILT/VILT) may prove more effective than fully self-regulated learning.
A well-designed DEI program drives positive behavioral change and ensures employees feel appreciated and included as part of the workplace.
Create Portals by combining various elements including Gamification, Microlearning, and Personalization to inject high degrees of engagement in gamified onboarding.
Use audience-specific onboarding techniques to enhance new hire integration into the workforce. Interactive visual features and gamified assessments provide for greater engagement.
Approaches like information layering and interactive content not only deliver better learner interaction but also a better onboarding outcome – including engagement and retention.Â
Design experiences with illustrated diagrams and infographics depicting real-life work situations. This helps inductees memorize, retain learning, and establish a lasting connection with the learning audience.
Use storylines supported by compelling narratives, absorbing interactivity, contemporary writing styles and approaches, and high-powered graphics to engage audiences and fast-track integration.
